I've spent 20 years studying Jyotish. It is indeed, as they say, an ocean of knowledge, and in this time, I might have been able to fully digest a few drops. Nothing humbles you like studying Jyotish does.

My story goes like this - I started learning in 2005, just ordered a few books. This was enough to get the ball rolling, and I learned the basics. A year later I joined Freedom Cole's Vyasa SJC study circle, which he used to hold at his house in the SF Bay Area. It was during this period from 2006 to 2009, that I was initiated into the Jyotisha lineage of Sri Achyutānanda Das of Odisha by Freedom. 

 

His classes were very advanced, teaching a great deal of what he had learned from Sanjay Rath firsthand. Thanks to him I made rapid progress, and by 2009 could call myself reasonably competent at reading charts.

I then joined the Parasara Jyotish Course from 2009 to 2016, learning the slokas of Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra directly from Pandit Sanjay Rath in the traditional manner.

 

Since then I've been digesting everything I learned from both him and Freedom, as well as studying the classics (Brihat Jataka, Dasadhyayi, Jataka Parijata, Phaladeepika, Prasna Marga, Hora Ratnam, etc), and refining techniques.

This jyotish study was done in whatever little time I could spare, while busy in my career as a software engineer and manager in the tech industry. Since I retired from the corporate world in 2019, I've had much more time to devote to this subject. 

 

What makes me unique is that my formative years studying mathematics and physics and later on, a career in software engineering have given me a very rigorous mindset and analytical skills. Combined with my strong fundamentals, this allows me to carefully evaluate cause and effect, and judge charts in an objective manner.

Then about five years ago, I started expanding into Vastu as well, with the primary goal of being able to incorporate Vastu principles into the design of a modern home. My wife and I had decided we wanted to design and architect a home from the ground up, so everything I learned has been applied and tested in my own home which we are living in now.
